Maya Traditions is a Fair Trade Social Enterprise and registered non-profit located in Panajachel, a small town on Lake Atitlan in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Since the late 1980s, Maya Traditions has been partnering with cooperatives of indigenous women artisans to bring traditionally-produced textiles to the global marketplace. Their purpose is to empower women artisans, their families, and their communities and, through Fair Trade and Social Programs, rescue, preserve, and promote their ancestral culture with a focus on backstrap weaving.

Maya Traditions artisans practice two types of weaving: simple backstrap weaving and brocade. The colors and design in simple backstrap weaving are created through the thread attached to the loom. It often features a variety of colors–or mixing different color threads for effect. Brocade weaving allows artisans to create elaborate embroidery-like designs into the weavings.
