Every fall, we turn our specific attention towards how we can be a part of bringing about and supporting freedom for women and men, globally and locally. Today, it is estimated that over 50 million women and men are victims of human trafficking. We refuse to just sit by in a world where people are enslaved, trapped and unable to live into the freedom that should be their story.
In case you didn't know, everything we do here at made is about using our freedom to give others that same freedom, to care for our sisters and brothers the way we would want to be cared for. Every purchase with us reduces vulnerability somewhere in the world. When you support fair pay, safe working conditions, and work that honors people as precious humans— you go upstream and in many cases stop human trafficking before it can even start because you help to eliminate a massive vulnerability caused by bad jobs or no job.
So, for this fall's book club, we are making space to learn from an incredible woman, Rachel Lloyd, who has survived the horror of human trafficking. (Side note: it is so important that the voices of survivors are given priority in this conversation). Through her book, "Girls Like Us," she invites us into her story of survival and the founding of GEMS, New York City’s Girls Education and Mentoring Service, while also challenging us to see the vulnerabilities beneath the surface that often lead to human trafficking. Vulnerabilities that we can be a part of reducing if we see people for who they are. One review of the book said, "Lloyd’s unflinchingly honest memoir is a powerful and unforgettable story of inhuman abuse, enduring hope, and the promise of redemption." We agree!
We happen to think growth with others is the way to go. It is in community that we are challenged, encouraged, reminded, and strengthened — especially when on that journey that is not the norm. So, we invite you to join us this fall for our Book Club, reading one that may be really hard at times and stretch us some - Girls Like Us, by Rachel Lloyd.
It’ll be simple. You reserve your spot in Book Club and order the book. Each week, we will read a section in the book and then, when we meet — we will discuss what we have learned and are growing in. This Book Club isn't just about what you know, but about what you are doing with that information in your everyday.
